The first of my themed mixes. I had wanted to make a mix similar to this for a while, something featuring lots of relaxing and dreamy tunes. As I was putting this together my main aim was to try and make it sound like the stages of a dream.
The first part of the mix I chose mainly ambient and beatless tunes for it to symbolise drifting to sleep, that sort of semi-conscious feeling you get when you’re on the verge of dreaming. I often find that I get that feeling when I’m fully awake and just listening to ambient, I get in a bit of a trance.
I also use the delay on Serato and turn the record off quite often to get the droney effect, that sort of blendy and droopy feeling when you’re drifting in between dreams, stuff is kind of coherent but also not.
32.42 mins in I play a composition taken from my favourite film – Waking Life -called Tosca Tango Orchestra – Ballade 4, Pt 1. Waking Life is a great film about lucid dreaming. This part of the mix is also supposed to symbolise having a nightmare.
I mix out with Sleepy Seven by Bonobo, one of my all time favourite tunes, I don’t really need to explain this – the clue is in the title.
I end with The Cure – Lullaby, again the clue is in the title. I wanted to end on something upbeat to symbolise waking up from the dream. Lullaby is also my favourite Cure song so it fitted in nicely.
